Easy Favicons - No Plugins required!
Published in Intermediate, Specific Effects, Photoshop.Favicons, or “Favorites Icons” are important because they will help with branding a website. Every time the user sees your logo, in the top bar of the window, in his favorites folder, wherever, he or she will instantly be reminded of your website! They are extremely easy to make, taking at most 10 minutes. First, start out with a 16 pixel by 16 pixel canvas. That is the generally accepted Favicon size.

You can use any graphic to make your icon, but rounded squares look the best.

Right click on the Rounded Rectangle layer and select “Rasterize”. Then select the corners and delete low opacity pixels.

Add your logo or graphic to the shape. Give it depth with some subtle gradients.

Save the image as favicon.gif. Then change the extension from “.gif” to “.ico”.

Upload it to your host and you’re done! You should see the favicon after reloading your site.
